Alternative to Bangkok air is to fly directly to Surathani airport from Bangkok and normally half the price to flying directly to Samui.
Once you have arrived in Surrathnai you need to get to the port and go the rest of the way by boat, which normally works out a lot cheaper alltogether than the direct route, but it takes longer.

Airport Tax

An airport tax of 700 Baht per person, not incorporated in tickets, is payable on departure. Foreign currency is not accepted. Airport tax for domestic flights is included in tickets. The exception is Koh Samui where there is a domestic departure tax of 400 Baht per person.
